FAST FOOD OUTLETS SURROUND SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS

Fast food close to high schools
A new report reveals that more than 70% of secondary schools in southeast Queensland are within 2km of fast food restaurant chains and 40% of them are within easy walking distance of outlets such as McDonald’s, Hungry Jack’s, KFC, Red Rooster, Eagle Boys, Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Oporto.

The report has raised the issue of whether there should be tighter controls on the placement of food venues in relation to primary and secondary schools. Diabetes Queensland has called for a voluntary sales ban to prevent children buying fast food during school hours.
